Yes, you read that right. The Louisville Zoo in Kentucky hosts a variety of animals and fun, but in the middle of the zoo is a small historic cemetery. There’s only a few markers in the actual cemetery, but a monument was erected in 1990 that lists more of the people buried inside the zoo.
The Old Man in the Cemetery

I’ve heard a tale about a statue in the Crothersville City Cemetery that will shake your hand, or maybe it’s not the statue, but the ghost of a banker that spent all the bank’s money. Either way I wanted to go check this cemetery out.
There are two statues close to the old entrance to the cemetery, one for Martha Bess and one for her husband E.C. Bess. I’m guessing the man’s statue is the one that the previous tale is about. What struck me about this statue, however, was that I’d never seen one like it in a cemetery before.

It’s a statue of an old man, looking grumpy and just old man-ish. It’s a big contrast compared to the statue for his wife, which is more traditional in the cemetery kind of way.
I looked up a little information about the markers, and learned that Mr. Bess was never a banker, but rather he worked with the railroad. Local history indicates that Bess sent pictures of his wife to artists in Italy to carve the statue, in classic Roman style, that now resides on her grave. He then sent pictures of himself, but his statue is of a man in business suit and tie. He never got to see his statue either, as he died before it arrived in Crothersville.
Bess Statues
I had no unusual experiences here, but it is a sight to see if you’re ever in the area.
The Grave in the Middle of the Road

Nancy Kerlin Barnett died on December 1, 1831 and was laid to rest in a small cemetery on a hill overlooking Sugar Creek in Johnson County, Indiana. Eventually, a road was put in near to the cemetery, but all was still well. The trouble started when the road was to be widened, and Nancy’s grave had to be moved. One of Nancy’s grandsons, Daniel Doty, wanted his grandmother to stay buried right where she wanted, and promptly grabbed his shotgun and sat on her grave until the county agreed to just build the road around it.

On August 8, 1912 a concrete slab was placed over her grave for protection, and a historic marker was erected in 1982 to tell this amazing story. So today, Nancy’s grave is a bit of a tourist attraction, and is always mentioned in writings of unusual places in Indiana. But this is definitely unusual.
